Andes offers all types of recreation for all types of people. Winter sports included skiing, showshoeing, and snowmobiling.
Spring offers hiking, turkey hunting, and fishing. Summer continues with hiking and biking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding,
golf, and tennis. Fall brings deer and turkey hunting, more hiking and biking and the best foliage watching!
Andes is located on the western edge of the Catskill Forest Preserve and is home to Big Pond and Little
Pond state parks. The township also includes the eastern portion of the Pepacton Reservoir. This means
we have excellent hiking, camping, fishing and hunting to enjoy right out our own backdoors. The area boasts
some of the best star gazing and bird watching with the bald eagle returning to the area over the past
few years.
Spring brings many people to the town for fishing and turkey hunting, and fall brings them back for deer, turkey
and starting in 2004-5 bear hunting. For details please go to the NYState Department of Environmental Conservation
for more information on permits, public access and the regulations regarding hunting and fishing. You will need a permit from the NYC Department
of Environmental Protection for a fishing permit to access the reservoir for fishing, a separate permit to hunt on DEP lands, and yet another separate
permit to hike DEP lands.
Andes also has it's own hiking group that gets together every other week to hike all over the Catskills and
sometimes on members land. They go out all year round, using snowshoes in the winter. Contact Jack McShane
for more information. Or check in with the Catskill Mountain Club for
great hikes and outdoor workshops.
Winter brings the Andes Snowmobile Club to life, which works with the Central
Catskill Trail Association, maintaining relationships with the private landowners
that give permission for use of their land, the grooming and maintenance of the trails, and access to
the main street of Andes for refueling at Hogans General Store and grabbing a bite to eat at the Andes Hotel.
And for kids Andes has it's own town swimming pool, open in the summer just next to the public school. There are tennis courts at the school that are open
to the public to use, although they are showing some wear and tear from the weather.
