Andes has a wonderful school that covers K-12 grades and continues to be ranked #1 in a five county area.

Read the 2002 state report on the
Andes Central School District

The Andes Post Office is located on Lower Main Street and is open during normal business hours Monday - Friday and Saturday mornings.

911 service addressing has been initiated in all of Delaware County. Old highway contract addresses have been replaced by the new system and all homes should have the new numbers on their signage. You still may see remnants of the old system, with many mailboxes having two sets of house numbers!

The downtown district is comprised of the main town sections of Route 28 (Main Street and Delaware Avenue) and Route 1 (Lower Main Street, then becoming Tremperskill Road). In this area the speed limit is 30 mph.

Main Street / Downtown Services and Rules
  • Garbage pick-up by (Howie Ruff - Wednesday and Saturday mornings) in the downtown district. Private contracts - call him to make arrangements.
  • Snow removal - In the downtown district, cars should be moved to alternate sides of the road to help the plows clear the roads as best as they can. A phone number should be left on the dashboard of your car to make sure you can be contacted to move your car, instead of having it towed.
    Town Services and Rules
  • Town residents use the landfill which is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30am - 3pm.
  • Town Pool - from beginning of July through Labor Day. Open to the public. Swim lessons in July in the mornings.
  • Snow removal - Only town roads are plowed. To find out if you are on a town road, please call the highway department.
  • Roads without speed signage have a 55 mph speed limit - but please drive a safe speed and respect residents, their pets, and farm vehicles.
Andes is guided by a planning and zoning department. Building permits are required and can be obtained by contacting the Code Enforcement Officer. Andes has filed a Comprehensive Plan with the NYS Dept of State to guide it's development. This document has been approved by the Town Board. An updated copy is on file in the library.
Copies of Andes' zoning law can also be found in the library.

The entire town of Andes is in an Agricultural District. This means that from time to time farm tractors will use the main roads to access their fields and do necessary chores like spread manure. Please respect the contribution these farms offer to our visual landscape and historical identity despite any momentary inconvenience to your olfactory senses or drive time. Give them a wave as you drive by and remember to buy local produce, dairy and meats from our great family farms.

Telecommunications are handled by Margaretville Telephone Company which provides local and long distance phone, cable TV, and high-speed Internet access. Cellphone service is not readily available with only spotty reception on the higher elevations.

Main Street businesses have opened their wireless Internet networks so customers can go online while enjoying a meal or snack in the village.
